Sturm und drang was a short and wild period in german literature - here's a babelized translation of my first hit on google:

"The Confusion": that's how Friedrich Maximilian Klingers drama of 1775 was called originally, before it was renamed on suggestion of at that time much respected "Genial apostle" from Winterthur, Christoph Kaufmann, into "Storm and Urge". This (at that time already common) epithet gave the name to an epoch of the German literature - or more exactly: to a movement, which was the logical result of the political and ideological-historical confusion of that time and nevertheless of a singular uniformity in its objectives and literary expression.

What constitutes the characteristic of this very short period, which began with the appearance of Herders "Journal of my journey" in the year 1769 and which 1786 ended with an escape-like departure of Goethe to Italy? It was a literary rebellion, with a radicality never before seen in Germany. While for instance the transition from the baroque to elightment was gentle, now a group of 20 to 30 years old literatti shocked the public with texts, which could be understood only as one single attack on taste and moral conceptions.

Because the storm and urge was a frontal attack against the socially unproductive enlightment, degenerated into a cold rationalism...etc etc
