Yes, fanatics of all stripes are an ominous presence.

When it comes to religion, when it comes to patriotism, or most any fervent cause or type of behavior.... including secularism.

I think it is true of the euphemistic "alternative life styles" as well. Most people, even if they disapprove, are willing to live and let live, more or less. But then they run up against the "in-your-face" fringes who wish to push their cause in bizarre and outrageous ways, and the battle lines become drawn.

Tolerance is a tricky matter. If we, as a society, are to live by any moral code ... then we are going to have to incorporate some degree of intolerance for those who do not comport with it. We already do that with our criminal codes.
