I am merely referring to your average church- goer, who may or may not be liberal in general, but who is certainly moderate in temperament, and shies away from categorically condemning anyone else to hell. As I have mentioned in the past, even a conservative Catholic like William F. Buckley cannot bear the idea that his Jewish friends (like Art Buchwald) will go to hell, and invokes the doctrine of invincible ignorance. Even a relatively orthodox apologist like C.S. Lewis speculates on the possibility that we are given a chance to find God after death, before things are finalized. (Lewis is much admired among evangelicals, by the way). Fundamentalists and some evangelicals will be harder- line about such things, but some evangelicals and most mainstream conservative believers are just as prone to take a moderate position on this matter as a liberal might.....
