NOT a hero of mine. I consider him to be the 'Senator from Disney' and bad on many technology issues and 'fair use' rights (but not generally wrong on his telco deregulation tack).

However, he is TOTALLY RIGHT ABOUT THE COOKED BOOKS OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. (And, if you'll carefully read his press release, in the last sentence he states that the claimed Clinton-era 'budget surplusses' were in fact never on the positive side of the column, and that the federal government was still in deficit - which of course, it was.)

TRUE FISCAL YEAR 2002 FEDERAL BUDGET DEFICIT: $412 BILLION (FIGURE TAKEN FROM PAGE 60 OF THE ADMINISTRATION'S 'MID-SESSION REVIEW'... NOT THE PHONY $165 BILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT FIGURE THEY PUT ON PAGE 1 OF THE DOCUMENT).
