I think Karen is giving you the argument that nukes did indeed stabilize the world for more than 50 years only because of the threat of MAD, ie mutual assured destruction between the USA and it's allies and the USSR and theirs. Since sanity seems to have caught on and both sides have reduced the number of nukes, that threat has lessened. Why until recently we even had an ABM treaty. The argument for stabilization is essentially the same one used by the gun huggers who run around with bumper stickers that say, "if guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns ". The NRA is therefore saying that guns are a stabilizing influence in the fight against crime.

If Saddam uses any nukes he has (and most experts say he doesn't) he would be committing suicide via the response from us or the Israeli's (if he launched agianst them). On the other hand, if he is forced into a corner and threatened with being overrun,for example by the US, he would be more likely to use whatever he's got. If the Israeli's were in danger of being overrun they would use their nukes also. That's the expressed purpose for the Israeli nukes and I quarantee you they are pointed at Iraq and other places around the arab world. The US doesn't need Israeli nuclear protection. Now how about answering my question.....do you think Saddam wants to commit suicide?
