Roger:

I was on the call. Co. attributed sales shortfall in Q to delayed orders by several large distribution customers, Japan sales weaker than expected and inability to get enough packages for 4000 series. Total was $6mm shortfall. Only Japan appears to be a non-timing issue. Bookings slow in May and June after a big April. No reading on July yet either way. Roelandts expects low single digit sequential sales growth for the Sept Q, and 25% for the year. Gross margins should be in the 60 to 62 percent range for the rest of the year, and SG&A should decline as a % of revs as well, depending on how much they have to spend to fight ALTR on patents. Inventory days came in at 77, at the low end of the expected range, which was encouraging. Roelandts said second half of the fiscal year (as usual) will pull their chesnuts out of the fire, and not to look for any real strength until September due to vacations in Europe. He also attributed ALTR's faster sales growth in the Q to product cycle timing. ALTR had a slew of new products last year, XLNX will benefit vis a vis ALTR in the second half of this year because their new products will ramp up at the same time ALTR's are peaking out. Overall impressions were that most analysts are concerned about timing issues on sales shortfall and some skepticism is developing about overall sales growth rate within FPGA/CPLD industry.
