David, a LOT of NZers have left, permanently. It really is quite a mess here and deteriorating daily due to increasing crime of an increasingly violent nature. When West Side Story was produced, it was horrific to me that people actually carried on like that [yes, I know it was just a play, but it reflected daily reality - I mention it for timeline and context]. At that time, a knife fight would have been unimaginable in NZ, let alone somebody actually having a pistol.
Yes, of course there have always been crimes of various types in NZ, but crime was not a cultural norm, expressed on a daily basis as it is now.
Now, pistols, rifles, shotguns, clubs and knives are commonplace.
Immigration has been an excellent source of crime.
It's interesting that Enoch Powell was vilified, but Britain quickly limited immigration and cut off the colonies. Now, Britain has terrorists in their midst [not just the malevolent IRA, but the Moslem variety too]. They have crime and murder aplenty. Immigrants or their descendants feature strongly.
Japan is very like Britain in many ways. But, it remains as Britain was; culturally homogenous, civilized, safe. People are well-behaved. Here is Britain and the same story could be told of New Zealand stats.org

Welfare is a major contributor, as are fatherless boys [due to welfare taking over as Daddy - governments don't make very good Dads, despite the best intentions of statist maniacs]. Girls don't do well either without Dad, but they at least don't commit crimes - what they do do is select useless fertilizing agents for their offspring and then use the state as father for their second generation welfare sons, who then are culturally bereft of any civilizing influences and commit all sorts of crime.
One day, the welfare state electorates will figure out that the dole and state as Dad doesn't work to make a good life for people.
Oz has sensibly cut off the NZers [including the Asians who swarmed into NZ as a stepping stone to Oz]. NZ must be about the most gullible place on the planet.
