Senate Committee Looks At New DTV Language

The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee is looking at setting the time line on when television broadcasters will be required to return their analog spectrum after the move to providing digital television (DTV).

The latest version of the legislation could lower the percent of households that need to be hooked up to DTV to 85 percent of households in a market. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Reed E. Hundt had balked at the Senate's plans to require 95 percent of households to have DTV before the FCC gets its hands on the analog spectrum, which it then could re-auction (TELECOM A.M. June 19).
