<<prefer, paper gold (stock) or liquid gold (the actual metal)?>> Neither, instead paper gold, in unit of tael, as in pieces of paper representing taels of gold supposed held in the bank vault, because they are more gold than stock, and easier to store and trade than physical. Sort of like a stock in a gold mining company with a rich vein of pure refined 9999 gold bars as reserve.
I figure, if the bank goes under and the gold turns out to be not there, and given the bank is one of 5 largest in the world, then my physical gold held at another bank (also one of top 5) will be worth a lot more, maybe, I hope:0*
