Microsoft's imitation of IBM's strategy of attempting to keep commodity technology proprietary was the highest form of flattery. Long term it will produce similar results for MSFT as it has for IBM. The only question is whether or not MSFT will recognize that the enterprise game has changed as IBM has. MSFT's solution are not very economical when one looks at Linux alternatives ( even Balmer has acknowledged this, claiming that Windows is still cooler, as if that matters ) and takes into account uptime, support costs, and the availability of enterprise-quality software at lower costs. There ain't no money in software no more, and MS faces the problem of a lack of new and useful software technology innovation by others from which to clone their second-rate products.

Xbox is a loser in a commodity market that can be seized by competition in a heartbeat. The loss of mindshare caused by the poor quality of Windows and Microsoft's public defiance of attempts to contain its monopolistic tactics is a long-term problem from which MS will never recover, and does not bode well for the company in the home entertainment market.

Tech hits of the 90s is a nostalgia collection of which MS is a major component. One-hit wonders are remembered but not highly valued. Time to get out of the last century John.
