high-powered microwave (HPM) and laser weapons are "on the verge of moving from the science and technology phase into the tactical platform phase". My younger son, the one who reads "Popular Science" and "Popular Mechanics," says that the military is working on a microwave weapon that causes intense pain without permanent injury, in short bursts. Probably be very useful in urban settings.
