The really scary thing for Canadian retailors is as dominant as Wal Mart has become most of the stores here aren't typical for them, being substantially smaller with the inherrited old Woolco ones, and the only country they don't have full grocery stores. Presumably that will gradually change. Where they have added groceries to existing stores sales of the existing merchandise has made large gains.

After clothes at the Bay I belive the cosmetics counter is next most important, where Shoppers Drug Mart has increased share in the last few years.

When it was back to school time a few years back that meant taking the kids to a few dept stores. Now it's Old Navy for clothes, Sportmart for shoes, Staples for pens and paper. Unless your WalMart where people are convinced it will be in stock and at a low price there just doesn't seem to be much reason to visit dept stores anymore.
