I have the same concern...do you believe this new wave of layoffs (IBM, American, USAir, Worldcom, Siebel, and so many, many more) will have an impact on the upcoming employment reports..?
I too just got the notice last week, spent a year at this little software company of 100 (now 80) -- got two weeks severance, ouch...my friends and colleagues working with the big software co's no better off, 3 out of 4 on the outs...many of us are going to collect unemployment for the first time in our careers...
An interesting observation: I've been in the industry for over 20 years, managed to rise to the executive ranks...now I will take any position as a safe haven...my colleagues share the same strategy...we will take pay cut (please no more options,) go back to the front line, etc...so we too are going back to positions before the bubble...possibly deserved...I smell a lot of churn in the high tech rank and file for many years to come...
BTW, before this company, the previous four(yes four) startups I joined have gone chapter 7 or 11...so much for finding that home run company...
