I definitely had in mind "the human condition." I have absolutely no idea what the content of "human nature" is. To be able to offer anything serious on that score I would have to stand outside history. No way to get there.

As for the improvements you mention, you are not terribly specific but I gather you are talking about living conditions, health, etc. Certainly that's true for the privileged inhabitants of more developed regions of the globe. Not so much so for others.

But I actually had a different distinction in mind. It comes from Eric Hobsbawm's, repeat, wonderful book on what he calls the short 20th Century. In case you need to ask, Hobsbawm is one of the preeminent historians of the moment. By way of a short introduction to the book, he offers a much longer list than I did and compares it with the violence humans did to one another in other centuries. I forget that. Just recall it was not comparable.
