Agreed about trade... many worry that it has already begun [even Bush backing steel and forest interests]... as for the $US:

IMO it matters not that the $ is 'highly regarded' since it is the marginal dollar that moves the markets... if Europeans simply slow their increasing of $US holdings [we're not talking selling existing holdings.... yet] the dollar will continue it's slide. Shockingly the current account has barely blipped from it's yawn even throughout this recession... and the capital account deficit is even larger!

OK, now we can talk about existing holdings: Numbers I have seen are about $8 Trillion, including 4.4 Trillion of equities and 2.5 Trillion of govt and corperate bonds... not included are foreign central bank holdings [about a Trillion total].

The numbers are clearly such that little analysis is needed.

I would pay attention to the $US going forward:
