September 24, 1998. VIX low was 31 and actual volatility was 45. November 16, 1987. VIX low was 47 and actual volatility was 60. Historical volatility would probably decline on a consolidation or a retest of the lows, whether partial or full. I think you know both of these cases were precursors to retests of major lows. This bottom made it into second place on the historical volatility to 1987. I only have data back to 1970. 73-74 lows and 82 lows had relatively low volatility to 87, 98, 01, and 02.

Looks like another headfake this morning with Dow/Naz negative but the SPX positive.
