Either you believe in intelligent design as the explanation of the universe and existence ... or you don't. What middle ground could there be, other than "I don't have a position" (agnosticism). What's wrong with "it doesn't matter?" Why is it so important that one take a position of the origin of the universe? That's a straight question. I can understand why fundamentalists think it is so important. They're focused on pleasing God, in which case it is all important. But that's not what we were talking about here. We were talking about humanity. I don't see why origins matter to those who are focused on the dignity and promise of humankind. Sure, it's always interesting to debate origins, but it's peripheral, not sufficient reason for either to think of the other as "other."
