I put the B29 reference in because there was a TV program here on it recently

One of the shows on the B29 recently was on how the Soviets copied it from B29's that landed in Russia during WWII. The Soviets made the copies so close that defects were copied also, and even patches put on the skin of original were on the Soviet copies. These provided the first four engine bombers for Russia.

One thread that runs through the history of Russian copies of western technology was the Soviet QC problem. They just did not have the systems to make the same quality as the west, even with copies. This showed up on the landing gear for the B29 copies. They had to buy these from the west.
