We are perfectly capable of valuing, and living by those values. Indeed, it is doubtful that we can help it. The question is whether there is an objective correlative. I could esteem myself so highly that I thought I was the emperor of the world, but no matter how hard I believed in that reality, I would not be the emperor of the world, but a person with delusions of grandeur. Now, the question is, does believing that human beings have dignity as such make it so objectively? No, we either live in the kind of universe where it is so, or we don't.
