Liberal Historical Ignorance Watch- The truth is: The Sov's and Chicoms couldn't have cared less. There was an inordinate fear in both the Johnson and Nixon administrations that the more dangerous enemy, the American left, would seize Congress and disassemble the US military at the height of the Cold War. It's part of what got Nixon dealing with the American left on a war footing (they beat him through the Watergate "scandal", but the war continues). In October, 1973, Nixon threatened nuclear attack on the Soviet Union if they sent assets to Egypt, which had once again broken its mediocre army over the anvil of the Israeli armed forces. The Russians backed down. Try to fathom them talking the gamble for the Hanoi Stalinists, who they and everybody else in the world hated. Not a chance. The Cold War is over and we won. If it weren't for the American left and their dedicated fifth column assault on two adimistrations, the Soviet Union would have collapsed in the mid-70's. Vietman has lived in Hell for almost 30 years, thanks to the American left. But, like that era of history, the American left itself is almost water over the dam...
