Nobody suggests that criticism of the Soviet Union was difficult during the Cold War.

It was pretty hard for Noam. All you've been able to come up with is something from 1986 after Gorbachev had been in office for a year and had instituted his glasnost policies and agreed to western disarmament proposals. Then for the first time, apparently, Chomsky begins to be critical of the Soviet Union. And for what? For the war against Afghanistan or the domination and oppression of Eastern Europe or the suppression of dissidents or the fomenting of "wars of national liberation" all over world - no, for perverting socialism.
