You do what needs to be done to avoid greater blood-shed later on.

Sometimes. Sometimes you end up doing what politicians say is necessary. If you don't look closely enough, sometimes you end up fighting not to avoid bloodshed, but over issues of political expediency.

That is why nothing a politician says should be taken at face value, particularly when war is being contemplated.
