I would not be surprised if WiFi coverage and 3G coverage are similar in three years, with 802.11a or 802.11g as the WiFi standard.

If this were to occur, I could understand why you would see 3G as being unnecessary. I just have a hard time seeing any of the 802.xx standards ever getting that type of ubiquity. Wireless cells have trouble covering most metropolitan areas....how many 802.xx connection points would you need for the same type of coverage?

Are there any public companies providing 802.xx coverage right now? I am curious what kind of business models these companies have.

Also, the type of data usage that I am thinking of could generally be provided right now by cell-phone companies and not 3 years from now. PDA's and cell-phones dont generally need data speeds much faster than currently provided by 1x. You can stream both audio and video at the speeds provided....the only thing you would be missing is downloading audio and video files and the occasional large power point presentation. I'm guessing that 95% of most users needs could be met right now.

The real questions (for me) are the pricing of the services and the availabilty of applications and handsets that will take advantage of the current capabilities. Hopefully, PCS and Verizon will manage to answer my questions over the next couple of months.
