Unfortunately, I promised my son to give him the computer back, so I cannot stay to work through some of these issues right now. I will say that the turn in my conversation with Karen came over her making out as if it were only smugness and lack of inclusiveness on the part of the religious that caused problems. My point was that it was natural for religious persons to think that atheism is inherently nihilistic, and therefore to fear its corrosive affect on morality in the long run. Thus, rather than smugness, there is a real objection and misgiving at the heart of the tension between the two. That does not mean there can be no cooperation, but in the long run, the religious must necessarily prefer a society of one sort, and the secular a different society. It is rather like the tension between true conservatives and libertarians in the Republican Party:we can agree on enough to emphasize points of cooperation and minimize points of difference, but if we ever were to triumph decisively over liberals, we would next fight one another.......
