I will say that the turn in my conversation with Karen came over her making out as if it were only smugness and lack of inclusiveness on the part of the religious that caused problems.

I don't know what left that impression. I assure you it was the farthest thing from my mind.

I embrace all persons of good will. I would man the barricades with Camus anytime. I am merely pointing out that it is not a trivial difference, and cannot be entirely set aside.....

The points I am making and the questions I'm asking are intended to evoke an explanation for why you have a greater affinity for believers who are not constructive elements of our society over non-believers who are.

I understand that the difference between believers and non-believers is not trivial just as the difference between conservatives and libertarians is not trivial. What I don't understand is why you would affiliate with the non-benign religious over the humanists. That, IMO, would be like you teaming with the liberals against the libertarians as the primary target. I do not understand why you would not team first with the humanists to eliminate the negative elements of religion and then take on the humanists later if need be.

My point was that it was natural for religious persons to think that atheism is inherently nihilistic, and therefore to fear its corrosive affect on morality in the long run.

This is the closest thing I've seen to an explanation. What I'm still missing is why this long-term threat is more worrisome to you than the current threat from the less benign elements among the religious.
