Paula:

I don't have a formula for "trailing stops".

I think when you are thinking of going long or short on a stock it is important to try to determine what is the best "entry point" and decide how much you want to risk.(I personally think is better not to risk more than 10%)

Remember what Jessie used to say :IT DOESN'T PAY A MAN TO BE WRONG. (ALWAYS CUT YOUR LOSSES SHORT)And W.B. rule #1 on investing: ALWAYS TRY NOT TO LOSE MONEY

It is also important to determine wether you are trading on a BULL or BEAR market.<g>(That is sometimes difficult to determine at the start of the trend, but it should not be too difficult when the trend is firmly established.)

If your decision was a good one, then LET YOUR PROFITS RUN.<g>The problem in that case is when to sell or "Take profits". That decision is not an easy one and sometimes it is more difficult to make.

I think the decision to sell (from a T.A. point of view)is when "THE RALLY FAILS". In other words is usually not the best to try to sell at the top, but to sell when the stock fails to resume the UP-TREND and the price and the short term average cross-under the medium term average.

I use a "mental stop" and don't use a "stop loss order".

What is also important to remember is the advise: When you want to get out,GET OUT.<g>

I don't know if the aforementioned answers your question or if it will be of any help.
