Bush Considers Measures to Boost Economy

Friday August 16, 1:41 pm Eastern Time

CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President Bush said on Friday said he is considering a package of measures to revive the American economy, weakened by accounting scandals, including measures to bring investors back to the stock market.

Bush declined to tell reporters specifics but said the package could include proposals to reform retirement plans, make changes to the capital-gains tax and lower taxes on dividends -- things that could help bring investors back to the battered U.S. stock market.

"Some have urged us to think about additional measures to help economic growth, so I'm thinking about it," Bush told reporters.

Asked about Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill, who has been criticized for his outspoken comments including one recently where he suggested aid to Brazil could end up in Swiss bank account, Bush said, "Paul O'Neill is doing a fine job as the secretary of the Treasury... I find him to be refreshingly candid."
