There are many premises in your post that we could discuss. But all of us on the thread have discussed them ad nauseum. So it doesn't help either of us or the chorus of other posters and readers to wade back through all of it.
I'll simply restate my own beginning point for all these conversations. If the Bush folk decide to invade Iraq, at some series of points things will not go well. And, tragically, when they do body bags will start arriving here. At that point, all those publicly undiscussed questions in The Nation editorial, the same ones that have been tossed around this thread, that the Bush administration has still not answered, at that point, there will be a political price that will be paid--great divisiveness here.
And the divisiveness will not be because the Bush folk invaded Iraq but because they failed to convince a broad enough segment of the American population of the wisdom and necessity of their plans. And, will not have convinced enough other nations.
If they do that, persuade large segments of the American population and what's termed "our allies" of the wisdom of it all, then, when things aren't perfect, the cushion of legitimacy will diminish the divisiveness. |
