That's no different than my present pension plan. When I retire, I have the option (for less money) to have my wife continue to receive monthly benefits for (a) five years or (b) for life if I should die first. Spousal five-year or lifetime benefits come with a price ... usually 10 percent of the monthly pension benefit for (a) and about 20 percent for (b). In other words, if my straight monthly pension benefit is $1,000, I can elect to have my spouse receive my pension for life if I should die first, but my monthly benefit is reduced, from day one, to $800 a month. It's all a matter of how you spin your own annuity.

Sounds to me this wasn't an actual pension plan, but some kind of ancillary benefit program for retirees. Are you saying this person's company provided no retirement plan? Did he qualify for Social Security?
