I believe you must change your strategy in investing.
Your concept of "I can't sell right now because my losses would be too great" is wrong.
You must understand that paper loss is already a loss. there is no point to hold onto a laggard stock.
For example, you have 100 shares of APAC on April 21, 1997. On that day the stock went down from $21.5 to $11.125.
Your portfolio went down from $2150 to $1112.50

Let say if you sold APAC at $11.125 and buy stocks of good quality company like
IBM, DELL, KO, G, or many others you might have recover all of your losses.

April 21
IBM $68.875
DELL $74.875
KO $58.625
G $79.375

July 17
IBM $99.625
DELL $148.75
KO $69.875
G $101.375

Before you put your money in you must consider the market, the industry sector, and the company.
Best of luck to you
Bye.
