Eric L., no correlation between Sprint phone availability & FCC approval

"Wireless analyst Andrew Seybold, a proponent of Sprint's national 3G rollout, says that the handsets are shipping one by one likely due to continued testing and approval needs. ''Some of these phones may not have been fully approved [by the FCC] yet or Sprint hasn't finished testing them,'' Seybold says, adding that he received that information from an insider he didn't want to name."

Interestingly, the most available Sprint 3G devices were the last to receive FCC type approval. The Handspring Treo 300 and Sanyo 4900 were approved 7/1/02 and 7/12/02, respectively. The first to receive approval, the Samsung SPH-N400 (4/9/02) and Hitachi P300 (4/19/02) are both still "out of stock". I think it is safe to say Handspring and Hitachi began production plans before the FCC approval.

This post considers only the 7 phones/PDAs listed on the Sprint web site as of today.

The status of Sprint's testing of these phones is unknown to me .. but I don't believe Sprint would list a phone on its web site, if it hadn't already passed its own testing phase.
