Actually, I am just admitting in advance that I would be very surprised if AMD happens to get 2.2GHz on their next processor release. They are currently at 1.8GHz, and their last four processor launches have been in tiny, 67MHz increments. That includes their .13u desktop debut, which even required a voltage hike, just to get to 1.8GHz. Overclockers confirmed very little headroom in these chips. It was as if even 1.8GHz required AMD's highest bin split parts.
So if they can all-of-a-sudden get a 400MHz boost in their next release, that would say a lot for the kind of improvements that they were able to achieve through either process tweaks, or a redesign of the logic speed paths. It would also suggest a much brighter future, competitively.
On the other hand, I also admit that things may not be as they seem. If AMD ends up paper launching these speed grades (or vapor launching, which is also a possibility), then I will obviously have to change my opinion on their future prognosis. I'll keep an eye out, and an open mind.
