I guess it depends on what one defines as large when it comes to farms.

Joan, I assume your earlier comment about one farmer handling 10,000 acres refers to the large grain operations out west. I put in a stint on a 1,000-acre dairy farm in the 70s and the guy had to hire oodles of help all year around. Those cows simply do not milk themselves!

Some of my ancestors homesteaded in southern Minnesota around ~1855, got chased out by the Indians in 1862, and then homesteaded again in western MN in 1869. But always there were lakes and streams and woods around. I cannot fathom the idea of homesteading on those treeless Dakota plains.
