Quoting sources in Balkh, the private news agency said the gunman opened fire at the commander at Chapurak, some 26 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital of Mazar-e-Sharif, and killed him on the spot.

Bashi was a Mujahideen (Holy Warrior) commander during the period of Soviet invasion in Afghanistan. He joined the Taliban regime in 1998 and was appointed as the deputy commander of the 70th Army by General Rashid Dostum after the collapse of Taliban.
