| Yes, we should want our family and friends to be whole, if possible--- to ease their way in the world, rather than to make it more difficult; to invite them to wider experience and opportunity, rather than limitation; and to empower them to go beyond inordinate dependency, whether on an individual or group. My brother, for example, is on the committee that advises on handicapped policy for the public transportation system, and it is good that the system is so accommodating. But all he needs is something to go wrong with his chair or his battery, and he is in a major crisis. Fortunately, he has a phone now, with a head set, to call for help...... |
