Thanks for the input on Avon & honest assessment.
You are right about doing one's own homework on a stock. That is one of the reasons that I am here on this thread.
Due diligence: I am not too concerned with what nurses have to say, because they really are not the ones making equipment purchase decisions. So, I contacted several people in the health care industry including medical technologists, hospital medical laboratory supervisors, neo-natal care specialists, pediatricians, and a pharmacist.
By law, hospitals are required to do a PKU test on newborns (requires drawing blood). Therefore, no matter how great the CCSI device is, blood will always be drawn from newborns.
Blood is also drawn for TSH tests (not required by law but routinely done) and also for glucose tests if the baby is large (over 9 lbs.). Thus, blood will always be drawn and is not a compelling issue to invest in this product (to save babies from having blood drawn).
But: Bilirubin tests are not always done at the same time as the above tests are performed. Bilirubin is fairly common in babies and can be very dangerous (cause mental retardation). If it is suspected, then blood is drawn and sent to the lab. The lab takes up to 1 hour or so to report their findings. In the mean time, the baby is put under a Bilirubin lamp (no big deal).
It is fairly common to continue to monitor the Bilirubin levels in the baby to see how they are progressing. By the way, adults can also get Bilirubin.
Hospital labs are moving towards performing tests that can be performed in the patients room and yield immediate results. Thus I was told that hospitals would be very interested in this type of test/device.
I will try to find out the answers to the following questions but I am sure someone one this thread knows the answers:
Question: 1) How much will a device cost? 2) How much will each test cost to perform? 3) Can the test detect the level of Bilirubin? or just that it is present? 4) How quick are the test results available? Immediate? In my opinion, if the device cost is reasonable, the results are immediately available, and the test is accurate, then this company will have very strong financial fundamentals and the stock price will increase dramatically.
