Hi all; Another way that the US can improve its popularity among foreign populations would be international assistance in safety and rescue for industrial accidents. We've got a relatively safe industry, and our expertise in the area might gain us some good publicity, especially on the stuff where people are trapped underground. Every country on the planet finds these disasters to be extremely newsworthy. Having a US team fly in and drill them to safety would be the kind of press that we need.

As an example, our recent coal mining save was probably impossible in many places in the world. But coal mining disasters are an almost constant occurrence, especially in the poorer parts of the planet. For example, just in July, 143 people were killed mining for coal in China:

A rash of coal mine disasters in July killed 143 people in China, far more than during the same month last year, state media said on Thursday. ... More than 7,000 people were killed in China's loosely regulated mining sector last year.

Right now we offer training programs for something like 100 other country's militaries. We need to do the same thing for their OSHA type safety inspectors. (At the very least, even the Libertarians will agree that this will have the bonus effect of making our industry more cost effective by decreasing the efficiency of theirs.)
