Should we have a full-blown, deep global recession to drive enough competitors out of business so the strong can survive? I've read a fair amount of debate on this issue, even among the president's economic advisors. In general, my sense is, yes, long-term it would be best, but the political consequences would be severe unless there was a way to deflect responsibility.
