Operative phrase Steven, is "any great number".

There will always be US troops in the middle east so long as there exist threats to our economic and political interests (oil, Israel).

But we need to replace these troops with economic development teams, peace corp volunteers, and NGOs aimed at bettering the lives of common Arabs and muslims in the region, all working to create economic diversity and stability.

We can't just operate, as it currently appears to be the case in Afghanistan, solely on a military basis. We have to be prepared to contribute to economic reconstruction and influence educational and cultural values (women's rights, human rights, and democracy).

That will take FAR LONGER than 4-5 years, but I don't see any problem with it as I believe it will be mutually beneficial.
