Although the organization is somewhat PC, most working teachers are pretty
much like their neighbors, fairly patriotic and civic minded, sometime liberal, sometimes
conservative, but mostly non- ideological, and so forth.

That is true, but unfortunately what has happened to the NEA is the same thing that has happened to AARP and to some other organizations -- a small, very active and politically liberally group has taken control of the organization and uses it for ends that the majority of its members do not support, but the members are too busy with their lives to correct things.
