If we permit this kind of logic to stand, we'll have Spain claiming the Mexico and the southern US belongs to them. Or more ridiculous, Peru laying claim over the Andes on the basis that the Incans once ruled them. That would be as ridiculous as Italy claiming England and France as parts of the former Roman Empire, or Israel declaring a historic right to Palestine....
