Hi Hawkmoon; Re: "If we permit this kind of logic to stand, we'll have Spain claiming the Mexico and the southern US belongs to them."

Not really. The problem is that Spain is a long ways away from Mexico or the Southern US.

It's all about force. Spain doesn't have a realistic way to press a claim to Mexico. China is somewhat more realistic when they claim Taiwan, but not by much.

I don't know the ancient history of the place, but I'll note that the article in the People's Daily disagreed with your position that "There is NO record that shows the Chinese actually ruled Taiwan until the Ching dynasty (kicking out the Dutch)." They claim ownership dating 1,700 years.

International relations are not a matter of who is right, they're a matter of what can be forced on whom. Arguing diplomacy on the basis of morality will lead you to almost constant contradictions. The only reason diplomats bother to argue over what's right and what's wrong is so that they can convince other humans to follow their path.

Personally, I don't think China has a claim to Taiwan because Taiwan has been very obviously a distinct country for a long time. It would be like Britain trying to reverse the American Revolution. Or more close to home, it would have been like West Germany claiming East Germany as a part of it. That West Germany succeeded was only because they had the agreement of East Germany (and the rest of the world).
