>>Telling the third world to reduce their population while we increase ours (no matter how we do it ) some how seems a little self serving to me.<<

see
prb.org
for the graph on where the majority of the world population growth is taking place.

The size of an average German family today is somewhere at 2.5 (essentially zero-growth). The average family size in Philippines 1998 cca 5. Same in Kosovo. In Niger 7. (with families where the wife has education, significantly lower in size - here's a way to go). Re US

Re family sizes (1999)
Hispanic 3.5
Asian 3.2
Black 2.7
White 2.5

with Hispanics predomintantly immigrants (1st 2nd generation) one can safely say US is importing the population growth.

>>The rich countries use the most resources per capita by far. They gotta be first to reduce their overall pollution /use of resources.<< Yes, that's what I was talking about. It's called sustainable growth.

>>What percentage of forests are left in Germany?<< Could be more (iow it's not cutting them down for print paper for instance). The problem is environmental stress (acid rain, UV exposure etc).

>>It's laughable to assume that recycling or conservation alone is gonna solve things like CO2 emission<< Recycling makes sense even if the bigger problems that you mention are still hanging on us ... Why US opposition to Kyoto convention? Instead of broadband hoopla, W could go for energy conservation drive. It's unbelievable how much can be conserved without discomfort (air conditioners etc).

Sustainable growth both in developed and undeveloped parts of the world makes sense. ´
