it was not an "anti-American position" to take "Anti-American" is one of those loaded terms. It's shorthand for an easily defined set of values that doesn't necessarily mean that the person described hates America, but definitely hates the status quo. "Anti-establishment" is probably a fairer term. How would you characterize someone who writes "Amerikkka" instead of "America"? Isn't that person saying that they think the establishment is racist and fascist? How about someone who burns American flags? Isn't that person angry? I used to hang out with some people in the SDS. They really hated the establishment. One of my best friends used to end every communication with "don't forget to smash the state." When I became a libertarian, he thought I was very weird. He's now a Ph.D. economist working in industry. He voted for Reagan, Bush I and Bush II. On the other hand, I know a significant number of folks in academia whose political opinions haven't changed since the 1960s. They would be very uncomfortable in most industries, because most business types are conservative, but academia gives them a haven.
