It's not a secret that most of their loans (to telcos) were securitized and/or syndicated (love that term, it has a nice '30's gangsta feel to it!) Nonetheless, the originating bank in these deals usually keeps a decent sized residual portion of the loan, so they take their lumps too...just not for the whole enchilada

I agree with the thesis that these loans came about due to "bankers not being bankers". It's the same phenomenon that's caused the real estate bubble (which will meet the same fate).
