It's interesting to me to hear that the school boards are so heavily politicized in so many areas. I have paid close attention to the local school board here, almost took a vacant seat on it once a couple years back. I have to say that left/right politics have never even been a point of contention here. I don't even know the politics of the local school board members, though I know three or four of them personally. The issues they struggle with are primarily financial and administrative....how to deal with a large influx of kids (approximately 400 in each grade level, up from 300 a few years ago); how to deal with a growing immigrant community with language needs (up from under ten percent of the school to over 15 percent); how to address a portion of the district that has raised the bar on demands for gifted programs while the state's budget issues have trimmed funding; how to provide enough space as thousands of new houses have been built.

Parents are very active in this district, but I am not aware of any attempt to control curriculum from a political perspective. Taxes are high, yet the people are pretty happy with the district. Few send their kids to private schools even if they can afford to.

I am wondering whether this political rancor elsewhere is the exception or the rule.
