An excerpt from an article in Barrons:

Ethanol May Sweeten Bilateral Ties

Arcuri said Brazil hopes to pair cooperation with China in the automobile manufacturing sector with Brazil's expertise in ethanol fuel and engine technology.

Brazil is already the world's biggest producer and exporter of sugarcane-based ethanol and all gasoline sold in the country must by law contain around 25% ethanol.

Arcuri said prospects for the ethanol fuel industry will accelerate next month when Brazil signs a joint venture agreement with Ballard Power Systems Inc. (T.BLD), DaimlerChrysler AG (DCX) and Ford Motor Co. (F) to produce the world's first ethanol fuel cell vehicles within five years.

The popularization of cane-based ethanol fuel technology will help both China and Brazil reduce urban pollution as well as increase employment opportunities in both countries' sugar production sector, Arcuri said.

China's sugar production is expected to hit 8.5 million metric tons this year and an increase in plantings is expected to boost that figure in 2003.

"...if ethanol becomes an international commodity...prices of sugar that have been falling about 2% a year will match the prices of ethanol as an energy supply, which are rising 2% a year, Arcuri said. "That will contribute to a balance in the price of these commodities in the international market and make it an important part of a country's economy and trade balance."
