But there's a fine line between helping and imposing our values upon them.

Cultures are just large groups of people. If they are destitute and not getting anywhere, they need to change their ways. Just throwing money at them without getting them to change their behavior is a waste of time. I know, I tried it with my youngest son. :^)

So help has to come with conditions. If you resent the help too much, and won't change your ways, you should not get it.
