"A bunch of bureaucratic backbiters" is closer to the mark. Any faculty tea would point that out. :^)

Oh, faculty members can complain as well as just about anyone us and since we pride ourselves on just how articulate we can be, the complaints can get pretty awesome. But that's not the point. The work structure of the academy, at least in the social sciences and the humanities is very individualistic, one is one's own boss to a very large degree particularly after tenure, pick your own research areas, get some grant money, publish your work, and risk the old fragile ego.

That's not the stereotype. But it is the case.
