Tom

I went to a HDTV seminar last night that convinced me that HD itself is still a few years off, but that GIC is in the right position to be an integral part of the advances until then. First, there was a demonstration of HDTV itself & it looked great. I think that a west coast station (KOMO?) is close to broadcasting, but the general time line is still about 1998-2001-ish.

More significantly, Bill Prestidge (Time Warner/Paragon) said they are happy with the GIC equipment that they use in their cable-satellite uplink. A competitor company Direct TV is using their own type of cable box, but I think that they may have an overall weaker satellite program. They are about to launch a third satellite soon, but it's orbit will dictate that subscribers install a second dish. The company representative made it clear that who is going to pay for the second dish hasn't been decided, but this seems like an awkward situation. They are also considering PC Websurfing through the satellite box, but again this seemed like an after thought idea that doesn't work well with their system. People would be calling an 800 number to tell the company what web page to send down for storage on their computers HD. I definitely think that interactive cable boxes have the advantage here.

I also got to see a new 30inch plasma TV- neat but expensive.

My conclusions: 1) GIC is partnered with the right companies at this time, slightly ahead of their competition. 2) Digital TV transmission is the immediate concern, with the switch to HDTV itself to follow a few years behind. 3) The PC link over the cable box is also going to be an important product issue.
